Keite Young’s debut album in stores this Tuesday August 28

SINCE LOCAL ARTIST KEITE YOUNG'S DEBUT ALBUM WILL BE IN STORES TOMORROW, I THOUGHT I WOULD RERUN THIS INTERVIEW HE GRANTED DALLAS SOUTH LAST MONTH.

Keite Young's name has been swirling around various R&B circles througout the year.  I happened to stumble upon one of Keite's tracks on the Black Music Month 2007 CD, where his single If We Were Alone (with N;Dambi) is featured with the likes for Tank, Kirk Franklin, Mya, and Sunshine Anderson.  The Ft. Worth native was kind enough to send me an advanced copy of his forthcoming CD The Rise and Fall of Keite Young, as well as grant me an interview regarding its release.

Dallas South Blog: Keite how would you describe your debut CD with Hidden Beach Recordings: The Rise and Fall of Keite Young?

Keite Young: The Rise & Fall of Keite Young represents a journey inward. I want to share my perspective on the Human Experience based on personal yet common situations and circumstances. Some may be more positive while others more tragic, but those are the "ups and downs" (in effect, The Rise & Fall) that we all experience…

DSB:  Who have been the biggest influences on your music and on your career.

K.Y.: well, there's Little Richard, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sly Stone, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Glen Goins, Prince….believe me, it just keeps going!

DSB:  How has your call to the ministry affected your music?

K.Y.:  Me being a minister has given shape and purpose to my creative power.  I know what I want to write about. I know how I want the listener to feel when I compose a chord progression.  I am very aware of what I'm communicating when I'm in the studio or on stage.  I don't bother with censoring myself. After all, what you are is what you are.

DSB:  I've read where you refer to the single "Masks" as "…the most   personally vulnerable song" that you have written.  What did you mean by that?

Keite thmb.pngK.Y.: Upon the time of writing, I was conflicted regarding certain subject matter in the song.  That is to say, I was raised in the Church and was taught to believe that homosexuality was an abomination before God.  On top of that, I was charged to teach others that belief!

Well, as my own relationship with The One (aka YHVH, aka The Source, aka "A List of Names Considerably Longer than My Musical Influences") matured, I decided that a God that "BIG" and perfect could not be angered or offended by any life decision we make.

"God is Love" and Love Is as Love Does. Love embraces, Love uplifts, Love endures. No life choice could change that.

DSB:  N'dambi is featured on the track "If We Were Alone" – my favorite one on the CD.  What do you think about the current R&B scene and which artists do you listen to?

K.Y.: Thank you! I'll accept that compliment for her as well (-: I think R&B is starting to become relevant again. Artist such as Joe, Jill Scott, India Arie, Musiq, Tamia John Legend and Robin Thicke have provided the public with an alternative to the disposable nonsense that has plagued popular music. Although I don't really listen 2 R&B these days, I do feel its resurgence (sadly due to Rap killing Hip-Hop).

DSB:  What do you have lined up between the time your CD drops and the end of the year?

KY: Shows, shows, shows!!! I do plan on getting back into the studio REALLY soon!

DSB:  Thanks for your time Keite.

Keite's debut album The Rise and Fall of Keite Young will be released August 28, 2007.  Make sure to visit Keite's MySpace Page.

One Man’s Opinion: The Greatest Hip Hop Albums and Singles of All Time

A couple of months ago a friend of mine dropped this list of Hip Hop's greatest albums and singles on me.  It was comprised by one of his friends, B. Holcomb.  I e-mailed B. Holcomb a couple of times to give him my opinions, but overall… this is a pretty tight list.

As for me, I'm a Biggie fan, so Ready to Die would move up a few spot on my list and One More Chance (my favorite all-time single), would move up to 3 or 4.  But all and all, solid work by B. Holcolb

I'd be interested in hearing what others think.

The 20 greatest of Hip Hop according to B. Holcomb

Albums

l hill.jpg20. The Misseducation of Lauryn Hill (Jaw dropping greatness)

20a (G, if you don’t let me count Lauryn Hill as Hip Hop, then my entry at #20 will be Only Built for Cuban Linx-Raekwon (THE STANDOUT ALBUM OF 1995…the 2nd greatest year of Rap Music (1987 being #1)

18. Efil4zaggin-NWA (Dr. Dre’s coming out party)

17. Criminal Minded-BDP (A must own for every household in America

16. Doggystyle-Snoop Doggy Dogg

mm.jpg15. Midnight Marauders-ATCQ (Phife Dawg’s coming out party.   BTW, am I the only person who believe the random female voice heard thru the entire album represents the beats telling a story (i.e. you know that figure w/ the squiggly lines on most of ATCQ’s covers???…4give me I digress)

14. Ressurection-Common Sense (Probably the greatest Sophomore album to ever drop; and The 3rd best album to drop in the year 1994 behind Southerplay….and Illmatic)

13. Liquid Swords- Gza (Perhaps the greatest solo effort from the greatest group in hip hop historyI mean even the track listing didn’t sync up with how the album played out man!)

12. Paid in Full-Eric B. & Rakim (Why don’t these boys just reunite for one last tour?)

(The next 11 albums (IMO) redefined hip hop relevant to its time period and require no further explanation from me)

19. Git Up, Git Out-Outkast f/ Cee-Lo Green & Big Gipp (7 minutes of raw chitlin’ flow from that dirty dirty.  Provides great view points of why our youth continue to be unmotiviated due to the hand dealt to them in the game of life…thank you Outkast (& Goodie MoB) for reminding us of how a hip hop 4 man relay race should be run!

18. Until The End of Time-2Pac (I realize I stand alone in this statement.  But this is Pac’s greatest song…another homer pick, as I’m certain  people will believe there are better Pac songs…but this one IMO is his most powerful)

lyte.jpg17. Paper Thin-MC Lyte (had to show love to the female emcees…even though I finally bought my first class ticket on the Jean Grae bandwagon (sorry Rage, but you just haven’t done anything since 97 save for the movie Next Friday…I digress.) but Lyte used to (and still does as displayed in the 06 hip hop honors holds it down)

7. One More Chance (remix)-B.I.G. (…there I is!  major pain (Payne) like Damon Wayans, low down dirty even…like his brother…Keenan)

6. Paul Revere-Beastie Boys (If you don’t get an instant flashback to where you were when you first heard this song after you hear Adrock say “NOOOOOOOOW” you’re pretty wack)

5. I ain’t No Joke-Eric B. & Rakim (One of the many songs to sample “Funky Drummer” by James Brown…on top of R’s flow…this is an undeniable  dance cut)

4. T.R.O.Y.-Pete Rock & CL Smooth (Perhaps the only song people don’t mind the ten second intro, followed by the mezmorizing Tenor Sax complimented by the hard bass thumsp & Pete Rock’s ad libs in the background then suddenly…I REMINISCE FOR A SPELL…)

3. Scenario (remix)ATCQ f/ LONS & uh….HOOD! (you’re hooked within 3 seconds!)

“Black and Missing and Not Forgotten” starts petition for equal media coverage of Stepha Henry and others

I introduced the Dallas South family to Deidra Robey and her blog Black and Missing and Not Forgotten last week.  Deidra has created a petition to national news stations seeking greater exposure for black women in the United States who are missing.  In her petition, Deidra makes some excellent points:

-   Chandra Levy. Laci Peterson. Natalee Holloway. Jessie Marie Davis. Do you recognize these names? What about Tamika Huston, Latoyia Figueroa, Linda Renee Innocent and Stepha Henry? All are missing [some now deceased] women. The only difference is the color of their skin. The first group is white and the second group is black.

stepha-henry2.jpg-   “[Stepha] Henry's (photo, right) case, however, has not been taken up by the media with the same fervor as that of Jessie Marie Davis — a 26-year-old pregnant white woman who disappeared from her Canton, Ohio, home in mid-June — about two weeks after Henry was reported missing…"

-   There even seems to be a difference in reward money. The FBI offered $10,000 for information on Davis. Currently, there is a $6,000 reward for information to help find Henry, but that sum came from donations. Henry's family contributed $4,000; Crime Stoppers offered $1,000; and another $1,000 was donated by a family friend.

These are things that black folks have been talking about for years, but Deidra has summed it all up in this well thought out petition.  Regardless of why it is, it is; American media goes to great lengths to cover missing white women while virtually ignoring African-American females in the same situation.

I haven't asked the Dallas South family for much, but I am asking that readers of this website take a moment to sign Deidra's petition. When I logged on to the petition, 46 people had signed before me.  I am blessed to have a large readership by blogging standards, so I know the type of impact that Dallas South alone could have on this petition.  Those readers, by the way, are from many different classes, races, and political affiliations.

If you have a sister, a mother, a daughter, a niece, or all of the above, click here (if you missed the other two links) to show your support of Deidra and her cause.  America often turns a blind eye to realities such as what Deidra presents on her site, but I pray that you do not.  I thank you in advance for you attention to this matter.

Black Hair Documentary Part Three

In Part Three of Aron Ranen’s Black Hair DVD, he continues to travel the country to see if the situation is as dire from coast to coast. Some of the highlights of this section:

Steve Luster (think Luster Curl) who has been in business for over 20 years says he can’t get his products distributed by Korean distributors.

One store owner in Chicago claims there are around 10 Black owned (black) hair stores compared to 300 Korean owned (4 in one block).

BOBSA (Black Owned Beauty Supply Association) has 1st annual banquet.
