UPDATE: ORLANDO BROWN IS O.K.

brown.jpg

ACCORDING TO DIARY OF A CONTENT BLACK WOMAN, ORLANDO BROWN CALLED A RADIO STATION IN L.A. TONIGHT SAYING HE’S FINE AND NEEDED SOME ALONE TIME.  BELOW IS THE STORY I HAD RUN A COUPLE OF HOURS AGO.
Deidra from Black and Missing lets us know that Orlando Brown of That’s So Raven fame is missing since Tuesday morning. I remember when Orlando was on The Jamie Foxx Show and Family Matters back in the day. Here’s what Black and Missing had to say about the disappearance:

The 20-year-old reportedly left his manager’s house around 10:20 a.m. to make a quick trip to 7-Eleven and has not been seen since. According to Brown’s publicist, Elayne Rivers, he had a full day of meetings and appointments in preparation for a photo shoot Wednesday.

Rivers adds that friends and family are very concerned, as the young actor is not one to be out of touch for long, and the convenience store was within a short walking distance from his manager’s home in Studio City.

She also adds an additional insightful comment. I’m surprised that there were only three articles at the time of this post about him. Especially with him being a celebrity – maybe people think that celebrities don’t go missing?

Anyone who might have any information should contact Elayne Rivers at TLToonz@aol.com.

Thanks to Farai Chideya, Devin Robins, and everyone at NPR for having me on News and Notes today. That would include Geoffrey Bennett who has invite me to become a regular panelist on the Bloggers Roundtable segment.

Today, I shared the Bloggers Roundtable with Kevin Ross of 3 Brothers and a Sister, and Valencia Roner of Diary of a Content Black Woman.  It was a pleasure, and I’d ask the Dallas South family to check out the work their doing on their blogs and Blog Talk Radio shows.

Click on the picture below to hear today’s show.  You will be directed to the News and Notes website, then go to “Listen to Wednesday’s show.” Let me know what you think.

Numbers still the same, listen to News and Notes today

Well PA was a 10 point loss for Obama.  I’m still feeling good because the numbers don’t lie.  I hear some of my fellow supporters getting a little pensive because they can feel the old bait and switch coming on.  I just won’t let myself go there.

Today in the Morning News, Gromer Jeffers writes that Obama has a number of hurdles to face.  There’s only one hurdle facing Barack Obama: Super Delegates.  Check out NPR’s News and Notes for my take on last nights events among other topics that we will discuss.

I never thought I would see this day:

J.C. Watts and Comcast to launch Black News Network

Thanks to Carmen D. for the heads up on the story of J.C. Watts and Comcast’s plans to launch a Black News Network.  Check the story by R. Thomas Umstead of Multichannel News, here are some highlights.

  • Washington D.C.-based Black Television News Channel (BTNC) announced Tuesday it has reached a multi-year carriage agreement with Comcast Cable for distribution in several of the MSO’s urban-based systems beginning in 2009.
  • The network, created by former U.S. congressman J.C. Watts Jr., will launch in 2009 and will provide original news programming with a distinctively African-American perspective, according to a network press release.
  • The network would be the first cable service to offer 24-hour news targeted to African-Americans. Prior attempts to launch a full-time news channel have failed, mostly due to the high cost of developing news. Neither African-American targeted Black Entertainment Television nor TV One offer daily news shows, instead relying on short news briefs throughout the day.

I think this is an interesting development that deserves our attention.  If anyone hears more on this subject make sure you give me a shout.

Ed Rendell and Minister Louis Farrakhan

I have 21 posts saved as drafts that will probably never be published. One of them that I started on March 26th was titled "Should Ed Rendell, Hillary Clinton surrogate, denounce and reject Minister Louis Farrakhan?"

Well of course the Pennsylvania governor can't denounce and reject the minister. Not after all the praises he has showered upon him.

minister-and-rendell.jpgIt was Roland Martin who first emailed me the New York Times story of Ed Rendell's support of Minister Farrakhan while mayor of Philadelphia. What's so shameful is that Ed Rendell, Jack Kemp, and many others realize the truth and acknowledge it while Clinton and others harp on the fears of everyday Americans who may not know better.

Hillary Clinton, just like most on the right, wants to play politics with the minister when the boots on the street reality just isn't what it's made out to be. Wisdom brings understanding, and The Nation of today is not The Nation of 25 or 30 years ago, plain and simple. John McCain is in Selma telling people that he admires those who marched on Bloody Sunday and I'm supposed to believe it. Min. Farrakhan tells us he has rethought some of his previous positions and there's no way his heart can change.

So what says Rendell? Hopefully he will tell the truth. That he meant every word that he said that day, and we can leave it at that.

Wheatland Town Crossing/Red Bird Post on Thursday

I now see why in the media world they give deadlines.  In that spirit, I’m letting you know that I plan to write a post on Thursday concerning my thoughts on the new Wheatland Town Crossing development in Southern Dallas and the Red Bird/Camp Wisdom area down the road.  Check back on Thursday, I hope to get some feed back from the community on this one.

Dallas South to appear on Wednesday’s NPR -News and Notes

npr_newsnotes_300.jpg I’m pleased to announce that I have been invited to participate in the Bloggers Roundtable on NPR’s News and Notes hosted by Farai Chideya this coming Wednesday April 23rd. Also on the roundtable will be Valencia Roner from Diary of a Content Black Woman, and Kevin Ross from Three Brothers and a Sister.

Speaking of News and Notes, their week long focus on Atlanta was off the chain. The pride with which all of the Atlantans spoke of their city was inspiring. If you get a chance, go back and listen to their shows online or subscribe to the News and Notes Podcast.

I’ve included stations in Texas and Pennsylvania that carry News and Notes below. You can also click here to find out whether N&N is carried in your state. The podcast will probably be available before the show comes on here Wednesday night. I’m guessing one of our topics will be the PA Primary and where the Democratic race stands. Finally here’s the feed for the News and Notes Podcast.

Was ABC Debate’s “flag pin” question by Nash McCabe planted?

There’s more foul news regarding the ABC so-called debate last week. This comes from the Houston Chronicle via Field Negro. See the full article at chron.commons.

  • After several days of Charlie & George lying about ABC’s questions and format in probably the most disastrous TV debate in history, an interesting little tidbit came to light yesterday. To distance themselves from the trivia and stupidity of the flag pin issue, they played the question on videotape “raised by a voter in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, a woman by the name of Nash McCabe.”
  • McCabe was actually interviewed in the New York Times on April 4. She was quoted in that article saying, “How can I vote for a president who won’t wear a flag pin?” and “I watch him on TV. I keep looking for that lapel pin.” ABC provided no follow up about whether she could vote for McCain or Hillary, since they don’t wear flag pins, either.
  • Will Bunch describes the reality perfectly when he says, “So Nash McCabe wasn’t located at random at all. Instead, someone at ABC News decided that they wanted to go after Obama on the patriotism issue, and they actively sought a Pennsylvanian who they knew wanted to bring it up. I assume they thought it would sound better if “a typical voter” asked the question instead of Charlie Gibson.

The same article asks of Clinton and McCain – Where are those flag pins?

clinton-no-flag.jpg mccain-no-flag.jpg

So you can’t vote for the black man because you never see him wearing a lapel pin? Are you freaking kidding me? This is the nonsense that makes me madder than anything else.

This is the politics of yesterday.  Most Americans couldn’t care less about the issues.  They don’t want to invest the time into combing through the candidates health care plans.  They don’t want to know who’s economic plan is best for them.  America wants to see who is wearing a lapel pin.

I can’t remember where I first ran across the lyrics from John Prine’s Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore, but I thought I should share them with you.

While digesting Reader’s Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I’d tell her how good I feel.

Chorus:
But your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more.
They’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don’t like killin’
No matter what the reason’s for,
And your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more.

3 takes from another Mavericks playoff loss

mavericks80783718.jpg

1.  Things changed when Josh went down.

When Josh Howard rolled his ankle by steping on Peja Stojakovic’s foot, the fortune of the Mavericks immediately changed.  I was surprised that the announcers on the national broadcast didn’t make a bigger deal out of it.

Not from an excuse standpoint, but more so on the defensive end Josh could hardly stick with anyone.  He kept throwing up bricks off that bad wheel and the Hornets slowly crept back in the game.

2.  Why did Avery take Dirk out?

I have to say I was frustrated with Coach Johnson when he took Nowitzki out  just under two minutes into the fourth.  The Hornets already had momentum on their side, and it would have been nice to see what Dirk might have done to try to curb the tide.

By the time Avery called a timeout to get Dirk back in the game, it was too late.  This is do or die time, I just felt like the Mavs should have pulled out all the stops to try to get this win on the road.

3.  This team won’t win with jump shots.

Yeah we’ve said it over and over, but the evidence was on display so clearly in the 2nd half.  The only player for the Mavericks who even attempted to play with his back to the basket on Saturday was Jason Kidd  -and not with very much success I might add.  When times get tough and jumpers stop falling, you need someone that can get you easy baskets.

David West gave New Orleans exactly that after a slow start.  It’s like Game 3 of the 2006 NBA Finals is playing on a continuous loop.  Get the lead, throw up jumpers, lose the lead, lose the game.  All while the other team drives to the hole and gets easy baskets from the blocks.

It’s a nightmare.
