Enhance your blog/internet experience with feed readers

Though I’m on the web quite often, I’m far from where I want to be on the technology tip. It wasn’t until a few months ago that I really understood the value of web feeds and how they could make my internet experience a lot more efficient.

In the past when I wanted to surf the web, I’d hit my favorite websites like Electronic Village, or CNN Politics, or Dallas Progress, but I could never get to all of them in one sitting. Once I started using a feed reader, I was able to find out when ALL of my favorite websites update their content.

This is much better than using bookmarks because you may or may not get new information when you go to a bookmarked page.  When you visit your feed reader, you don’t have to worry about revisiting old data, unless you want to.  It also keeps you from missing anything if you don’t get around to visiting your favorite site for a while.

I use Bloglines to aggregate my feeds. That means Bloglines keeps a log of my favorite websites and tells me when they are updated. It’s not just blogs, but mainstreams sites like CNN, USA Today, and Politico as well.

There are plenty of other good feed readers including Google Reader, Pageflakes, and more. I’ve found Bloglines to be very easy for me so I stick with it. Now I’m tracking 50 websites at the same time and the reader compiles (aggregates) all of them in one place and only shows me the updates since I last viewed them.

So check out Bloglines or any other reader, but make sure to subscribe to my feed (http://dallassouthblog.com/feed) when you do.

She who must not be named almost got me

Not sure if any of my astute readers have picked up on this, but Dallas South has gone dark on she who must not be named. As she continues to go from coast to coast pleading her case, I’ve found the best thing to do is follow Senator Obama’s lead and look towards November.

Today, she who must not be named made a most unfortunate slip up before an editorial board. Were I not over her, I’d have to make a big deal out of this one. But there are enough people out there to get the junior senator from Illinois’ back.

I have to give her credit. She almost pulled me back in which is why she keeps saying this ridiculous stuff in the first place. But she who must not be named should find the Chamber of Secrets and just go away.

John Ellis Price named vice chancellor at UNT’s Dallas Campus

May 16, 2008

PROMOTION AT UNT’S DALLAS CAMPUS: PRICE NAMED VICE CHANCELLOR

DALLAS — UNT System Chancellor Lee Jackson announced today the reappointment of John Ellis Price as the chief executive officer of the University of North Texas Dallas Campus. Price was first appointed over the campus, the future UNT Dallas, in 2001.

pricetn.jpgPrice will “continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the UNT Dallas Campus as its chief executive officer and spokesperson, ensuring that the future UNT Dallas meets its short-term and long-term goals. He has done a very good job of nurturing relationships that will enhance the new university and help us meet the goals of the Dallas community and its students,” Jackson said.

Jackson also said that Price’s title would change from vice provost to vice chancellor, reflecting a clear line of authority within the UNT System. “His duties have grown in proportion to the growth of the Campus, and much of his work is now with me and various external groups, not just with UNT Denton,” Jackson said.

The UNT Dallas Campus began operations in the Spring 2000 semester and was designated by the state legislature to become the first and only public university within the City of Dallas. Enrollment began with only 55 students, but has risen to more than 1,800. The largest increase in enrollment occurred during the Fall 2007 semester, when the student headcount rose to 1,874, a 32 percent increase from the previous fall semester.

unt-dallas.jpgMost importantly for the UNT Dallas Campus, the full-time equivalent student enrollment rose to 814 in the Fall 2007 semester, a 22 percent increase over the previous fall. Under current legislation, the UNT Dallas Campus must reach 1,000 FTE before administrators open UNT Dallas, a comprehensive, four-year university.

Price said the growth of the UNT Dallas Campus has been “rewarding, but challenging.”

“More than anything, I realize that the growth of the UNT Dallas Campus would not have been possible without a great faculty and staff, all of whom are committed to fulfilling the mission of the Dallas Campus and the future UNT Dallas,” Price said.

The mission of the UNT Dallas Campus is to increase the number of citizens in Dallas and the North Texas region who hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and implement programs and partnerships that will help to increase the high school graduation and college-going rates in these areas.

Price will maintain his appointment as a tenured faculty member in the Department of Accounting at the University of North Texas.

The UNT Dallas Campus operates under the authority of the University of North Texas in Denton, the state’s fourth largest university, and is a component institution of the University of North Texas System. The Campus currently offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Campus will become freestanding and open as UNT Dallas, the city’s first and only public university, by 2010.

UPDATE: The cat’s out of the bag – DNC State Blog List not kind to Black Bloggers

For the last week or so, there has been a discussion going on in the Black Blogosphere regarding bloggers who have received credentials for the Democratic National Convention. This far, those who have been granted passes will sit on the convention floor with delegations from each state and U.S. Territory.

Since the list was published black bloggers have combed through the it trying to see if any African-American run sites are listed. There are none.

See a complete list of State Bloggers at the DNC convention here.

My brothers in blog African American Political Pundit and Francis Holland have been hitting this subject hard over the last week. I have been slow to jump in the fray because I’m still not sure just how many black bloggers applied for credentials in the state section. I applied, as did Mike D. from Dallas Progress and Eddie Griffin (Ft. Worth) for his blog. Fellow Afro
Spear blogger Yobachi Boswell also applied for a credential in Tennessee. Burnt Orange Report was the Texas selection.

Karen Brooks of the Dallas Morning News wrote an article that will appear in Wednesdays paper discussion the situation. Here are some highlights from her article.

  • Last week, the national Democratic Party announced that 55 online writers had been chosen for the “State Blogger Corps,” to cover the convention in Denver in September. But some members of the self-titled “afrosphere” — blogs written or published by African Americans — are angry that the “State Blogger Corps” appears to be mostly white, particularly since the party appears poise to nominate a black candidate, Barack Obama, for president. “OK, folks, black bloggers to the back of the bus,” read the headline on the African American Political Pundit blog.
  • But the blogs don’t appear to be self-identified as written or owned by African Americans, as opposed to blogs like the African American Political Pundit or attorney Francis L. Holland’s numerous blogs, which feature his picture. He called the list “tremendously embarrassing and harmful to the Democratic Party.” The delay in announcing the minority blogs, he said, is hurting their ability to raise money for travel expenses and get vacation time.
  • The issues prompted Shawn Williams, who writes the DallasSouth.com blog, to write to U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas, to complain about the lack of diversity among the chosen bloggers. Pam Spaulding, an African-American blogger in North Carolina who has applied to the general pool, suggested on her blog — Pam’s House Blend — that minorities don’t blog about state and local politics as much as white people do, narrowing the pool.

See my letter to Congresswoman Johnson here.
I don’t think this was an intentional act on behalf of the DNC, but the consequences are real. Actually, word is there was at least one blog who was intentionally left off -Cotton Mouth out of Mississippi. I think it’s a black run blog but I’m not 100% sure about that. Anyway, here’s Cotton Mouth’s story:

  • We at Cotton Mouth must disagree with the selection of The Natchez Blog to represent Mississippi’s blogging community in Denver. We like and respect Casey Ann who in addition to writing there has posted on Cotton Mouth, but her blog should not have been selected over Cotton Mouth.
  • We’ve had 33 posts so far THIS WEEK. The Natchez blog has had 24 posts so far THIS YEAR.

Apparently state officials in Mississippi poo-pooed on Cotton Mouth’s chances and chose a lesser known, less active blog. Go figure.

Back to the consequences. We all live and die by the traffic to our website. Whoever provides the most compelling content gets the most traffic. So while I hope to get a general blogging credential for Denver, I still will not be able to provide the same type of access as those who are on the floor. What’s a brother to do?

Anyway, I don’t feel as slighted personally as I do from a wholistic standpoint. Despite the way black bloggers have covered this presidential race and all of the talk of building new coalitions, it seems like business as usual (that’s twice I’ve used that line this week,). I wish I had the luxury of just posting about politics, but there’s just to much more than needs to be done. If Mike D. blogged politics all day who would be working on getting those drug houses torn down.

I think my frustration comes from a different place than AAPP and Francis, but in the end it’s all the same. This list is unacceptable. Period.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution has picked up on this issue.  See there story by clicking here.  Make sure to read the comments section which shows a lot about what we are dealing with here.

Dallas South’s NPR News and Notes Appearance

Click on the banner below to hear my appearance on NPR’s News and Notes today.  Thanks to host Farai Chideya and producers Ernest Campbell and Devin Robbins, as well as the folks at Cakemix Studios for making things run so smoothly.

I didn’t really say all that I wanted to on the NAACP tip, but since the tone was set early for a Benjamin Jealous love fest, I let it ride (this time).   Props also go to fellow AfroSpear Blogger Amani Channel and Shaun King who were also on the Bloggers Roundtable with me today.
