Who is Joe the Plumber?

I kind of left the Joe the Plumber news alone today, but I thought the comment by Brown Sugar was interesting and I checked it out at Crooks and Liars. Here’s what they had to say.

I guess it’s no wonder John McCain was so happy to use “Joe the Plumber” as a debate prop last night — he’s a partisan Republican who also happens to be a member of McCain’s old friends, the Keating family.

From Martin Eisenstadt:

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Say it ain’t so Joe!

Angry McCain falters down the stretch

John McCain came out swinging in the third and final Presidential Debate. He seemed intent on his promise to “kick Obama’s you know what” at Hofstra Wednesday night.

But somewhere between hello and goodnight, Senator McCain let his temper get the best of him. Maybe his campaign didn’t tell him about the split-screen that would capture his every move. He had a bad case of the Al Gores through the second half of the debate, huffing and rolling his eyes quite a bit.

In CBS Poll, fifty-three percent of uncommitted voters surveyed said Barack Obama was the winner of Wednesday’s debate. Twenty-two percent said McCain won. Twenty-five percent saw the debate as a tie. A CNN poll taken after the debate found the same thing.

McCain never really recovered from Bob Schieffer’s turning the debate towards the candidates’ views on attack politics. Obama really turned the corner there with his explanation of who he “pals around with,” Republicans who have served on boards with Bill Ayers, and rising above the fray. McCain drove the low road express right into the gutter and where people aren’t willing to go this time.

Obama continues to be seen as a front runner after the debate but in an early morning breakfast on Thursday, he warns supports against overconfidence. This comes from Ben Smith’s Politico Blog:

At a breakfast fundraiser this morning, Obama used the example of the New Hampshire primary, when he lost to Hillary Rodham Clinton after a huge win in Iowa, to warn his supporters against overconfidence, Carrie Budoff Brown reports.

Otherwise, they may get “spanked,” he said.

“For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky or think this is all set, I just have two words for you: New Hampshire,” Mr. Obama told top contributors at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. “I’ve been in these positions before when we were favored and the press starts getting carried away and we end up getting spanked.”

He added, “That’s another good lesson that Hillary Clinton taught me, so we want to make sure that we are closing strong, running through the tape.”

Less than 3 weeks, and I can’t wait for this to be over. And someone please tell Joe the Plumber I said hello.

On Dallas Inland Port: Dallas Morning News Recommends Master Plan

The Dallas Morning News Editorial Board has recommended that the International Inland Port of Dallas take up a Master Plan.  The effort for the Master Plan is being lead by Commissioner John Wiley Price. It is also supported by the North Texas Council of Governments.

The Allen Group, by far the most active developer with the Port (including the government groups) opposes the Master Plan.  I have followed their work over the last couple of years from afar and up close.  The buildings they have placed in the Inland Port go above and beyond anything that a Master Plan would suggest – natural lighting, parking lights pointing straight down, extra greenery.

I found one line in the DMN quite funny.  “They (Allen Group) warn, withough evidence, of unnecessary delays, uncertainy, bureaucracy, restrictions…”  Uh, can you say Trinity River Corridor Project?

There are a lot of Johnny Come Lately types hovering around, and I never do well with that dynamic.  And I’m wondering where they get that folks like Wilmer and Hutchins will be pushed around by developers.  The fact that The North Central Texas Counsil of Governments and Dallas County (alledgedly) pushed forward with a plan with very little input from the smaller municipalities could be construded by some as pushing around.

The Morning News has gone through much more documentation on this than I have, so I will defer to they’re research. But thus far this has not been a public/private partnership. Most of the work done on the port has been done by the private sector, and the public side has been master planning without much private input.

This should be watched closely.

Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times and other newspapers grapple with Presidential endorsement decisions

Steve Rhodes who blogs at Division Street for Chicago’s NBC 5 has an interesting post regarding newspaper endorsements for the upcoming election. In a year that you’d figure Barack Obama’s hometown editorial boards would give him the nod over McCain, Rhodes says there may be more to their decisions than meets the eye.

It seems the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, and other papers throughout the country may be faced with the prospect of endorsing Obama against the will of their publishers. Here are some of the highlights from Rhodes’ post:

  • The Sun-Times would have been an easy call under its old masters, the felons Conrad Black and David Radler. Black and Radler took the paper on a dramatically rightward turn during their time. Former editorial page editor Steve Huntley is a conservative, and now as an Op-Ed columnist for the paper is one of the few pro-McCain voices in the paper.
  • There is no doubt the Sun-Times editorial board prefers Obama, although this week the so-called progressive conscience – if that branding is even still operable – chose to endorse incumbent Republican congressman Mark Kirk over liberal Democratic challenger Dan Seals. The wild card in all of this is Sun-Times publisher Cyrus Freidheim, the former CEO of Chiquita. whose political contributions are almost exclusively Republican, including donations to Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, and – in large chunks – various apparati of the GOP.

At the end of the post, Rhodes links to Editor & Publisher which is tracking newspaper endorsements nationwide. Thus far Obama has received the endorsement of 28 papers to McCain’s 11. There are no Texas papers included in this list.

I’m interested to see hot the Dallas Morning News -who endorsed Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama prior to the Iowa caucuses- will go. They were one of the the first major newspapers in America to endorse Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee.  It would be hard to see them digging out McCain at this point,  but it wouldn’t surprise me.

2nd Annual Help the Homeless Walk A Thon in Downtown Dallas

DALLAS, TX (OCTOBER 10, 2008) – Fannie Mae, Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance (MDHA) and the City of Dallas are pleased to host the 2nd Annual Help the Homeless WalkAThon, which will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2008.  Located at City Hall Plaza in Downtown Dallas, the WalkAThon begins at 10:00AM and concludes with a concert by Nuttin’ But Stringz, finalists in the third season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent.  The young brothers, who are violinists, will electrify audiences with their unique blend of classical music, hip-hop, jazz and R&B.

Proceeds from this year’s WalkAThon will be used to support the creation of more permanent supportive housing units, a proven solution to ending chronic homelessness. The City of Dallas plan calls for the development of 1,200 additional units of permanent supportive housing during the next five years.  A prime example is CityWalk@Akard, which will offer housing, retail and office space beginning in Spring 2009.

Assisting the homeless is one of the most effective means we have to help them become more active and meaningful members of this vibrant city.  Versus shelters that operate on an emergency basis, supportive housing provides long-term solutions centered on individuals, not a pipeline.  It allows homeless individuals to make lasting changes in their lives by providing the ultimate symbol of dignity; the safety, security and pride of having a place to call home.  By empowering the homeless, we continue to empower our community.

Whether you walk as an individual, a corporate team, or a group, you can make a significant difference.  Last year, more than 1,200 participants put their soles into helping the chronic homeless in Dallas, raising more than $200,000.

Those wishing to walk in support of the chronic homeless, please visit www.HelpTheHomelessDallas.org or call Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance 214/670-1144.  For event sponsorship information or corporate participation, contact Judy Noble of MDHA at 214/670-1138.

Participants may pre-register for $25 through November 21 by Noon at www.HelpTheHomelessDallas.org.  On-site registration, from 8:30AM to 10:00AM, is $30. Registration for children 18-years-old and younger is $15.  The registration fee also entitles walkers to a commemorative WalkAThon T-shirt, which includes colorful artwork designed by a 10-year-old camper from Rainbow Days, a non-profit member of Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance that hosted a summer camp for homeless children .

John McCain has lost his way in 2008 Presidential Campaign

I like John McCain.   I do.

Why do I like John McCain?  For the reason that he states in his stump speech.  Because he has taken on his party.  Because in the past, he has tried to shake up Washington.

Remember the Gang of 14?  You know, the seven Republican and seven Democratic Senators who came together to break Democratic filibustering of George W. Bush judicial nominees.  McCain wasn’t very popular for “reaching across the aisle” in this case, but he did it and it got something accomplished.

John McCain won the Republican nomination for reasons such as that.  True dyed-in-the-wool Republicans split their votes between Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee.  It was McCain’s centrist tendencies in areas like immigration and campaign finance reform that helped him pull the upset in the Republican Primary.

Now, McCain spends his days pandering to the very base of the Republican Party that is at a 15 year low in popularity.  A base that comes out to his rally’s saying they want to “kill” his opponent.

I can forgive McCain for (repeatedly) voting against the MLK Holiday, but I let him slide for catering to the racist wing of the Republican Party and waiting until Friday to even say one word about the tone of his audience.

At the end of the day you have to be true to yourself, and in his heart of hearts, John McCain knows that this isn’t who he is.  He knows better than to debate a man and never look him in the eye.  He knows in his heart that that shows weakness, yet he allowed others to tell him it showed strength.

John McCain knows that if you have a problem with who a man hangs around, you say it to his face when you’re in the room with him.  You don’t wait until the next day when you’re miles away from one another.  John McCain knows better.

This Presidential race is far from over, and the economy has been no friend to the McCain campaign.  And it’s my belief that Obama has a superior strategy in place, as Bill Clinton did in 1992.  But the predicament that John McCain finds himself in today is because he has so solidly pandered to the very people that he claims to have fought against in his Washington career.  They didn’t win him the nomination and they won’t win him the election.

On Adam “Pac Man” Jones: Gossip Girls within there right to search for truth

The Gossip Girls

That’s what I call them. They guys (and girls) that cover the Dallas Cowboys only looking for the soap opera angle. Last week it was Tony and T.O. – “did they talk?” “didn’t they talk?” “did they kiss and make up?”

I got so sick of it I had to shut down the radio. The biggest purp (may not be a good word today) of Soap Opera Radio serves as co-host of the Michael Irvin Show. He only wants controversy, even with guest Nate Newton by calling a grown man “Big Juicy.” You better watch yourself with that one Kevin.

Anyway, this week, Adam and Tommy Jones get into it at Joule and now all Hell breaks loose. And rightfully so.

Jerry hired police officers to detail Pac Man and Mr. Jones (Tommy) felt he did what he needed to do. When I was Pac Man’s age I liked to hang out late and party too. But he’s in a different situation that the rest of us. His very livelihood is at stake, and apparently he just doesn’t realize that yet. By the sound of one caller on the Ticket yesterday, Mr. Jones (Adam) has been hanging in some places that you would think are off limits.

While last week’s Cowboy coverage was hot mess, Jerry has to realize that this week’s coverage is fully warranted (another bad word). Channel 8 lead off the first 6-8 minutes of the 5 o’clock news with the Pac Man story. Fans were told that there wouldn’t be a peep out of Pac Man this year. I don’t think early morning parties is what they had in mind.

So go ahead gossip girls, I’m not mad at ya’ll this week. Maybe next week we can get back to on the field action. But it’s kind of hard with the team Mr. Jones (Jerry) has put together.

Barack, Michelle, and Joe share similar personal stories come from the same place

By Jazzy of Because I Said So

Barack and Michelle Obama, and Joe (married to Jill) Biden are 3 the hard way. Each of these individuals has personal tragedies and triumphs that a vast amount of Americans can identify with. Barack and Michelle’s stories we have heard often along the campaign trail for the past eighteen months and they are stories of perseverance and stamina. If you are unfamiliar with the Obama’s story you can read here and here .

Another story that you may not know as well is that of Joe Biden . Where Barack Obama is cool and measured the type of man who is the lighthouse in a stormy sea. Joe Biden can be viewed as fiery willing and able to give a dissenting opinion. Joe Biden after the death of his first wife (Neilia Hunter) and daughter showed a grit and determination a steady resolve to continue to serve his country.

Joe was able to do all of this while keeping his family first and ensuring his sons were raised in a well balanced home. For five years Joe was a single father working in Washington until he met Jill. Jill is a force of her own and would be a great national asset with two Master’s degree and a PhD. in Education. Jill is almost more qualified than a certain Vice-Presidential candidate the only thing she is lacking is that she can’t see Russia from her home.

This is how my story fits with my chosen candidate and his running mate. Raised by a single mother, with the help of wonderful grandparents, I lost my grandfather during a pivotal moment in my development. I was able to attend one of the best private schools in Texas, and continued on to grad school. Barack, Michelle, Joe, and I share an American dream; we are the American realization.

Barack’s proposed policies, Joe’s unrelenting persona together are focused on repositioning America as a dominate force in the world and removing the mockery that has become the last 8 years. There are three weeks left so get to know these candidates better, to see who really shares your story and in doing so you will see who really will have your back in Washington.
