Cash Loans Dealer replaces Starbucks on Camp Wisdom Road in Southern Dallas

Who in the hell left the gate open?

That’s the kicker from the above sermon by Rev. B.W. Smith (about 2:00 in) when describing a little dog that always yapped at a big dog from behind the safety of a fence. Now I’m not really drawing a parallel with the dogs in this post, but I am wondering, who in the hell left the gate open for a cash loan store to moves in next door to a check cashing place.

When Magic Johnson brought Starbucks into Southern Dallas it was a proud moment. When I moved to this part of town I often stopped by the coffee house, even though it wasn’t as cozy as most. I hated to them close, but it was never packed so I could understand.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the building was getting a paint job, loud red and yellow to be exact. I figured it was either going to be repurposed as an El Pollo Chicken or Williams Chicken. Not what I would have chosen, but they pay taxes so I could let that ride.

But when I was told last week that another check cashing place was moving in, I was pretty upset. Riding by this week I saw their sign up: Loan Star -Cash Loans. I would never have imagined that this would go up right next to PLS’ outfit.

The Dallas Morning News published an excellent investigative report on Sunday about pay lenders and legislators like Ft. Worth’s Sen. Wendy Davis who are attempting curtail their activities. Payday lenders are virtually unregulated here in Texas.

Read Doug Swanson’s Pay Day Loan investigation article written with research provided by students from the Mayborn Graduate School of Journalism at the University of North Texas.

As the article discusses, they are only open because people see value in their service. But their service takes advantage of people . Taking advantage of people isn’t a crime, but charging 900% on a loan should be.

And who from the community is keeping track of the type of development moving into our community? We all came together to stop the New Fine Arts building that was going in on Westmoreland, but what about these check cashing outfits?

Is anyone at the table when these outrageous lenders look to further penetrate our area? And by the way, does anyone care that the Pet Store that left the Southwest Center Parking Lot is now at $8 Fashion Outlet?

I know we’re desperate for tax revenue and business expansions in the South but seriously, does that mean we accept anybody that’s not selling porn? Or does it mean that because we’ve left the gate open for so long we get what we get? Too often we’re like the little dog in Rev. Smith’s story – yackity yack, yackity yack, yackiity yack.

Join Me and Save Dallas

PUT ON FOR YOUR CITY! – VOTE NO!

Here’s what’s going on:

Many of you moved to Dallas and live here because of the opportunities available to you. You moved here because Dallas is a growing city.

Dallas has been losing everything of value to the suburbs. We lost the Cowboys to Arlington. Nokia Theatre is in Grand Prairie. The Texas Motor Speedway is in Fort Worth instead of on I-20 in Oak Cliff. Don’t you want to do things in Dallas?

More than $2.5 billion dollars of economic impact and $800 million in direct spending is waiting for us if we VOTE NO! One group is trying to prevent that from getting to Dallas.

If Dallas becomes less business-friendly, we lose. The economic future and opportunities of our generation depends on whether or not we VOTE NO!

We didn’t like the last Mayor because she shot down every project and now we have a Mayor with great ideas for a great city. We need to have his back!

How it affects you

Dallas will be become a ghost town.

We won’t be able to bring back and build up South Dallas, Oak Cliff, Pleasant Grove, and West Dallas unless we VOTE NO!

No more places in Dallas like West Village, Mockingbird Station, and Uptown.

If Dallas can’t bring big events to downtown, finance economic development, and recruit companies, this city will dry up! The more we lose, the more jobs leave Dallas, and the less opportunity you have to succeed. That’s not why you came to Dallas!

Here’s what you need to do

They have more money but we have more people!

If you want Dallas to continue to grow, you need to come to our rally on Wednesday April 29th in front of City Hall.

Music starts at 4PM and the speakers start at 5:30–guest speakers include Veronica Torres of the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, Michael Davis of Dallas Progress blog, Ron King of PartyChaser.com/Trinary Media, and others.

Are you going to let one group stand in the way of YOUR future?

Come hang out with 1,000 of your friends and learn why we must fight for our city.

Keep Your Heads Up Spruce: Failing the TAKS, Does Not Mean Failing LIFE!

By James “Bird” Guess

So we know that only 10 percent of Spruce graduates were college ready in reading and math last year, and the school has been rated academically unacceptable for the past four years. Anything else?

Oh wait, the kids don’t care about education and their parents did not either, so they are simply repeating the cycle, they live in a severely economically disadvantaged community, the kids fight frequently and there is no hope. If students do not pass the TAKS Test this spring, Spruce could potentially be closed like similar schools in Austin or Houston, or be restructured into all boys or girls schools.

Let’s get all the negative statistics and comments off our chest and focus on what really matters: Empowering the students, parents and the COMMUNITY!

For far too long the students have ingested nothing but negativity regarding their failing test scores, potential school closing, and how they may become failures in life. This is a recipe for student disaster. And if the students feel they are failures, they will soon act as failures and pursue alternatives to high school, which has made them bitter and uncomfortable instead as a place of learning, growth and inspiration.

We must understand that students at Spruce and other predominantly Black and Hispanic schools must endure special social and economic burdens that many White students in suburban school districts do not have to worry about.

Imagine coming from home school and not seeing your mother because she is working a second job or your father because he is incarcerated. What’s the result? No emotional support and no one to check or go over your homework and share what you’ve learned.

Imagine as a student being pressured by their parents to obtain part-time employment to help pay the bills to keep the lights on and food on the table. What’s the result? Education becomes less of a priority and students accept low-skilled occupations in return for immediate money to help pay for living expenses.

If we do not act to inspire these students to do their best, then the community will continue to be negatively impacted because the students will not be prepared to successfully manage life. Crime will increase, poor decision-making will be considered normal, and education will be viewed as an unnecessary burden, instead of a vehicle for success.

As educators, we must understand that education in the truest sense of the word is “developing students to reach their full potential and preparing them to successfully manage real-life.” Although the TAKS Test may help prepare students for college, it is incapable of measuring the two most important factors that determine academic and college success – determination and strong learning habits!

Since students at Spruce encounter special social and economic situations the need special classes on financial education, and real-life decision-making rather than tricky TAKS questions that most students say are “boring, irrelevant and too much pressure to pass.”

Rarely in life do you work on something for years and then be required to take a test on it and if you fail the test erases everything you have accomplished in those years. As a successful entrepreneur, I can testify that the secret to success is learning from failure, and having relentless ambition.

After speaking to over 150 students from DISD schools, the TAKS Test clearly erodes academic ambition and if we don’t find an alternative, we will continue to fail our students and teachers, not because we don’t have a solution, but because we have stopped trying to develop an alternative learning and assessment solution.

Day of Blogging for Justice:Standing Up Against Police Pre-Trial Electrocution

Petition for Congressional Hearings against Taser Torture

According to Amnesty International, 351 people have died for one reason or another after being stunned with Taser guns since June 2001 (Star-Telegram). Most recently Michael Jacobs Jr., 24 years old died after being stunned with a Taser in front of his Ft. Worth home. .And yet this issues of stun gun deaths has yet to make even a blip on the national radar screen.

We are not against the use of Taser guns. We are against the indiscriminate use of the weapon and for the recognition that it is deadly. Delivering a 50,000 volt to the human body without knowing what issues that the person might have is not a proper use of justice.

The weapon has a place it trying to avoid shooting a suspect. But officers sometimes use tasers when they aren’t even threatened. Just look at the cases that I’ve written about in the last couple of years regarding this weapon.

Taser Death in Winfield, Louisiana – August 14, 2008

Black Couple Tasered While Shopping (December, 2007)

Dallas Area Man Tasered after he calls 911 – (December 2007)

Wichita Police Taser Deaf Man (December 2007)

Black Man Tasered in Austin on Traffic Stop (video:December 2007)

Pregnant Woman Tasered (video: November 2007)

What we advocate for law enforcement agencies to move the use of taser guns down lower on the Use of Force Continuum. This is the escalating use of force that law officers use in hostile situations. They vary by jurisdiction, but in general it looks something like this.

Level One * Officer Presence

Level Two * Verbal Commands

Level Three * Empty Hand Control

Level Four * Pepper Spray, Baton, Taser

Level Five * Less Lethal

Level Six * Deadly Force

Taser guns are considered to be the same as pepper spray, and batons. I think it would be beneficial to add a 7th level, with Taser Guns being Level 5 or 6. Either way, these weapons are clearly more lethal that pepper spray and batons.

Please sign this petition, directed at Rep. Pelosi, Sen. Harry Reid, and the Congressional Black Caucus asking them to investigate this deadly use of force that disproportionately affect African-Americans.

This Is Our City: RIP Dallas Video brings people together to stop Props 1 & 2

Hat Tip to Mike Davis of Dallas Progress for turning me on to this R.I.P Dallas produced video in the spirit of “Yes We Can.” I saw a few friends of Dallas South in the video, including Ms. Jan Gore and District 5 City Council Candidate Tiffinni Young.

The refrain is “This Is Our City,” and it is. This is our city, and now is our time. Let’s Vote No on Propositions 1 and 2.

Jason Johnson : Keep it Simple

By Jason Johnson

Adkin’s Diet. The Mediterranean Diet. The Detox Diet. The Cabbage Soup Diet. Weight Watchers. Jenny Craig.
There are many diets out there that promise weight loss. And the truth of the matter is-they all will result in some initial weight loss. Any diet will work and should work, because the theory behind all diets is lower overall calories. You’re going to lose weight on a Cabbage Soup Diet because at the end of the day, you’re taking in less calories than you normally do. And they all have you cutting out the junk food. I’m a big believer in eating 5-6 times a day for weight management. I do it every day, it works for me. And I’ve had clients get great results eating 5-6 times per day.
Here’s the 64,000 dollar question: So what’s the best diet?
The one you’ll stick to.
A lot people have a hard time eating 5-6 times a day. Whatever the reason, they just can’t or won’t eat 5-6 small meals per day. A lot people have a hard time keeping up with the “points” on the Weight Watchers. Again, whatever the reason, they just can’t do it. So they look for the next diet to try. They over-think their diets. They over-complicate their food choices. They try to combine 2 or 3 diets into 1. A co-worker told them not to eat the yolk when they make eggs. Another friend recommended they cut out all fruits because they heard fruits are high in sugar. You saw an ad on Yahoo that said your favorite “thin” celebrity eats fast food twice a week, so you justify it’s ok for you. You saw a report that said not to eat golden delicious apples. Rachel Ray lost 18 lbs on this diet. You have good intentions, but all of this information leads to paralysis by analysis . Approximately 95% of all diets fail.
For most people, if they just keep it simple in terms of weight loss, the results will come. What do I mean by “keep it simple?” In no particular order:
1. Make better food choices. You pull into your favorite fast food stop. Be honest with yourself. You know a burger, fries, and large soda is a poor choice. If you’re serious about your weight loss, make a better food choice. Get the grilled chicken salad (no mayo), fruit bowl, and water. You know pigs in a blanket and a donut are a poor choice for breakfast. Make a better food choice. Opt for oatmeal. Or whole wheat toast w/peanut butter.
2. Cut back on the liquid calories. These really add up without you knowing it. If you drink 3 sodas per day. Cut back to 1 per day. Eventually cut them out altogether. You don’t need 4 cups of coffee per day. Or 3 cups of orange juice or lemonade per day. Cut back on the liquid calories.
3. Drink more water. You’re thinking: “But water is boring!”Add lemon. Or add 1/2 crystal light packet for flavor.
4. Eat a healthy breakfast every day. You gotta jumpstart your metabolism 1st thing in the morning by eating a healthy breakfast.
5. Cut back on sugary foods. Everyone knows that excess sugar is not good and leads to fat storage. Just cut back. If you have to eat the cheesecake, only eat 1/2 or just a few bites.
My motto is always “move more, eat less” and the weight loss will come. Incorporate these 5 rules into your lifestyle, and start exercising, the weight loss will come.
Until next time.
Stay healthy, and stay active,

“Enough is Enough” adds to “Vote No” Momentum

When I ranted on WFAA 8 (which can be viewed here), a couple of weeks ago, I asserted that the Vote No crew was lacking in their efforts. Looks like someone was listening.

Since then, there was a Southern Dallas Press Conference, R.I.P. Dallas came out swinging, and Enough is Enough met up and created the commercial you see above. This morning on the way home from taking my son to school I heard Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson urging voters to “Vote No” on one of the R&B stations.

Trey Garrison (Trey Garrison:Plausible Undeniable) wrote an article in the Dallas Morning News on Wednesday saying that now is not the time for “The People’s Hotel.” Trey’s articles are always a great read, and how it does it in that 630 space is a skill I haven’t mastered yet.

But Trey and the crew are still premature in calling this a “taxpayer hotel.” If zero people walked through the door (which even Vote Yes say won’t happen), then maybe it would be. But I haven’t heard anyone against the hotel explain why Dallas bookings have gone up since the council went ahead with their plans.

And though many cities have decided like Dallas to skip on building a big time stadium, why gave all of the Top 20 convention cities but Dallas built a Convention Center Hotel? Because it is a logical and necessary risk in trying to protect the millions of dollars in convention spending.

Ft. Worth Taser Death Prompts AfroSpear Day of Blogging For Justice

On Friday, members of the AfroSpear will participate in “Day of Blogging for Justice: Standing Up Against the Police Pre-Trial Electrocution.” This effort is open to all bloggers who would like to see law enforcement recognize the deadly nature of this weapon and use it properly.

This is in response to the taser death of Michael Jacobs, Jr. in front of his Ft. Worth home last Saturday. Ft. Worth police chief Police Chief Jeff Halstead promised a thorough investigation of the incident.

The rules of Blogging for Justice are simple:

  1. Share a post on your blog focused on your concerns about the tasering of Blacks folks.
  2. Send an email to AfricanAmericanPoliticalPundit@gmail.com so that we may document everyone’s participation.

This is not the first time we have tried to highlight the lethal nature of Tasers, and it probably won’t be the last. But hopefully each time more people will become aware of the misuse of tasers across the country.

Dallas South “Get Into the City” May 8th at Belmont Hotel Dallas

We’re proud to announce that the next Dallas South “Get Into the City” event will be held Belmont Hotel Dallas on Friday May 8th starting at 7:00 p.m.  If you missed the last Dallas South GITC, you don’t want to be caught slipping again next month.

The Belmont Motor Hotel was built in 1946 and is situated on a hill on the outskirts of West Dallas and just north of Oak Cliff.  After years of decline, the hotel was restored to it’s original glory by local developer Monte Anderson in 2005.

My wife and I hit up the patio of the Belmont last summer, and the view of Downtown Dallas is unparalleled.  The hilly terrain and Art Moderne design – with emphasis on horizontal lines, rounded corners and stucco facades- give the Belmont a California feel.  BarBelmont and Cliff Cafe are a perfect compliment for folks looking for a great dinner or a place to hangout with friends.

Get Into The City is an event that introduces the Dallas South family to locations around town which may not currently be on their radar.  Last month we kicked off the concept at Texas Caribbean Foods in the Old Sears Building (Southside on Lamar) and everyone kept asking when and where would the next one be.

We’re excited about showcasing this West Dallas asset that many folks drive by on I-30 everyday and don’t even know it exists.   Sponsorship opportunities are available, so if you would like to showcase your company to the send me an email at shawn@dallassouthblog.com .  Make sure to mark you calendars for May 9th and make plans to Get Into the City with Dallas South.

Who:    Dallas South Family and Friends

What:  Get Into The City

Where:  Belmont Hotel Dallas
