State Representative Barbara Mallory Caraway and Dallas Independent School Board Trustee (DISD) Lew Blackburn will host the 2nd Annual Career Futures Initiative Job Expo and CareerFest on Saturday April 4, 2009. This event provides high school students with an opportunity to meet representatives from profit and not-for-profit businesses offering paid summer internships.
The “2009 Career Futures Initiatives Job Expo and Career Fest” will be held from 8:30am -2pm at the Bill J. Priest Institute, 1402 Corinth St., Dallas. The “Career Futures Initiative,” created for incoming juniors through graduating seniors in high school aged 16 to 18, is a combination of the ideas and efforts of Rep. Mallory Caraway and Dallas Independent School District Trustee Lew Blackburn.
The initiative was created to help raise the success rates of Dallas ISD students and is dedicated to increasing students’ performance and comprehension in science, math, engineering, and social networking by giving students the opportunity to work in the real business world. Representative Mallory Caraway said “when I did the research, I found that the high schools in my State House District are underperforming because of the challenges they face in math, science, reading.
I believe that society will benefit if our students can get practical experience in the subjects are most critical to their success. It is even more important that we partner with businesses, and corporations during the critical economic times to ensure that students are college and workforce ready.”
The event will also feature valuable workshops for the teens including Financial Literacy for Teens presented by Comerica Bank, Résumé Writing, Teen Dating Violence, Healthy Eating, Appropriate Work Attire, college recruiters and more. At press time, participants included El Centro College, Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas, South Texas Dental, Trinary Media, Wal- Mart and 5 branches of the Armed Forces.
DISD School Board Trustee Lew Blackburn said he “is excited to present the Career Fair again this year and is “incredibly proud and happy with the student results from last year’s event.”In the Career Fest’s inaugural year, 25 students were placed in internships and Representative Mallory Caraway is optimistic that even more students will benefit this year.
