Old School Friday: Outside my box

This week’s Old School Friday theme is “Outside my box.” I’ve found that my musical box has expanded in my old(er) age, and includes folks like “Steely Dan” But for this week’s theme I’ll go with Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

I wouldn’t have been caught dead listening to this act back in the day, who’s best days were happening just as I was entering college. But after a few years, I’ve come to appreciate the tortured genius of Kurt Cobain. Happy Old School Friday!

Old School Friday: The Greatest of All Time

Pretty tough category and a lot of ways to go with this one. I first thought about Prince, but then there’s not a lot of Prince footage on the web. Mary J is my girl and I could always throw up one of her joints. But I decided to go with the Notorious One.

His career was so short and it’s amazing to think of how he could be considered the Greatest of All Time by his body of work. But when you see this video and how he was flowing at 17 years old, it helps put it in perspective.

Happy Old School Friday!

Old School Friday: Best Soul Train Perfomances

Sorry I’ve missed the last couple of OSF’s but I’m back with a vengence this week. The theme is Best Soul Train Performances.

I’m not sure which is crazier in this video, how good James Brown is or Don Cornelius’ outfit. Here’s James Brown and Make it Funky.

Check Out Alfonso Ribero AKA Carlton Banks on a Soul Train themed episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Early 80′s I didn’t think any girl group could compare with The Mary Jane Girls. In the 90′s En Vogue made me rethink that. I think this single was the first cassette that I ever bought with my own money. Here’s a classic from back in the day for sure.  HAPPY OLD SCHOOL FRIDAY!!!

Old School Friday: Child Hood Singers

The theme for Old School Friday this week is “child hood singers.” We’ve already done the New Edition and Jacksons thing, so here are a few oldies but goodies for the younguns. Happy OSF!!!!

Monica – Don’t Take It Personal

I remember this being the hit in ’95 when I spent a summer in Muskeegon, Michigan.  I’ve always enjoyed Monica’s music and the..shall we say “urban” flava that she brings to the scene.

Roxanne Shante – Roxanne’s Revenge

Roxanne Shante was just 14 when she made the “answer” to Roxanne Roxanne. Not long after that she had a child, but she and her people had the business savvy to ensure in her contract that her record label would pay for her education. Between her hard work and their money (over $300,000), she is now a Ph.D. What if all rappers had that type of sense?

Tevin Campbell – Can We Talk

We were jammin’ Tevin freshman year in our Discman’s.  He even loaned me a mack line that I laid down on my wife back in 1992 when at the end of an evening I told her “tomorrow will bring a better you and a better me.”  Of course she didn’t buy it, but she’s still here ain’t she?

Bonus Tevin – Round and Round

I had to throw up this Prince produced Tevin Campbell hit that really introduced him to the R&B scene. It was his first solo joint.

Happy Old School Friday: When I Was in 10th Grade (1990)

HAPPY OLD SCHOOL FRIDAY!!!

Man what a treasure trove of great songs to choose from, so excuse me for breaking the rules and posting an extra song. Whip Appeal, Poison, Hold On. I really wanted to go with Ice Cube’s “Once Upon a Time in Projects” but not sure Dallas South is ready for that one.

This list is probably a mix of 10th & 11th grade, but I think it works. So let’s get rolling

Welcome to the Terrordome

With all of the great songs that Public Enemy produced on Fear of a Black Planet: Can’t Truss It, Fear of a Black Planet, Fight the Power (voted the #1 hip hop song ever by VH1), Welcome to the Terrordome has always been my favorite. I remember we used this as our run out song our junior year in basketball. The video was disabled but who needs visuals with these raw lyrics and this ridiculous beat.

Deee Lite – Groove is in the Heart

Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, and Q-Tip all chip in on this joint. This is one of those songs that people with all types of musical tastes could agree on.

Janet Jackson – Come Back to Me

Janet….what else can you say?

Bonita Applebum – A Tribe Called Quest

People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest, what an absolute classic with tracks like “I Left My Wallet in El Sugundo” and “Can I Kick It?” And Q-Tip is till making great music.

I started out a little down today, but thanks to Old School Friday I’m straight. Check out these other great Old School Friday participants.

Old School Friday: The Jacksons

Of course this week’s theme of the Jackson’s should be easy. Throw up “Billie Jean” , “Thriller” and “Control ” and call it a day right? But we’re supposed to dig a little and there’s so much to choose from. So let’s see what you think of what I came up with.

2300 Jackson Street

The beauty of OSF is that even though I think what I post will appear on everyones site, usually it doesn’t work that way. I’d think that the quintessential Jackson collabo would pop up on everyone’s site, but maybe not.

3T -Anything

Remember when Tito’s boys jumped into boy band craze? I’d forgotten how popular they were back in the 90′s. They also had a hit with Uncle Mikey.

Torture

The Jacksons only made two videos for songs from the Victory album, including this one for “Torture.” The album wasn’t quite as successful as I remembered it. But looking at this video, maybe I shouldn’t be that surprised. You’ve got to fight through the first five seconds or so of this video to get to it.

Check out the rest of these sites for Old School Friday. HAPPY OLD SCHOOL FRIDAY!

Old School Friday: Favorite TV Show Themes

Thursday nights back in the day were all about NBC. Different World, The Keaton’s (Family Ties) Cheers, eventually Seinfeld, I loved them all. But of course the king of the roost was The Cosby Show.

The season premier of Cosby became like a Michael Jackson video debut once they started changing up the intro each year. This Caribbean ballet production was my favorite of all.

Also on Thursday night was Night Court and the enigmatic Judge Harry Stone. The characters were typical 80′s sitcom fare: the oversexed DA, wise cracking sister, the tall dumb oaf. Night Court had a memorable theme that ranks up there for me so I’m listing it as my second choice.
