Amazing Grace History/”Amazing Grace” By Wintley Phipps

Not a whole lot of explanation needed here, but I will say this. When you are trying to teach people something, like Mr. Phipps is doing here, it’s a whole lot easier to kill them with kindness. He taught somebody in that audience something they didn’t intend on knowing or probably didn’t want to know.

I wish more black folks in the faith circle who had his audience would use it as he did, and I wish more black pastors who could put their message in a manor that White America where they could digest it without compromising.

What I like is that he’s not sugar coating our soft-pedaling the reality of what he is talking about. Imagine, my intention was to just write “this speaks for itself.’ Thanks G.B. for directing me to this video. Enjoy

KERA’s Bishop College documentary to celebrate historic Dallas institution, airs Monday February 16th

bishop-library-internal1

When I look at all of the wonderful and prophetic pastors – Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, Dr. Denny Davis, the late great Dr. C.A.W. Clark- that came out of the Bishop College fold, I’ve often wondered how in the world a place with such a tradition could have ever been forced to close its doors. Bishop College is an American institution that sadly exists only in the memory and hearts of its alumni.

I was however excited to learn that KERA will broadcast the documentary Bishop College: A Bridge Between the Worlds at 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 16 on KERA 13. The documentary, by KERA’s Rick Thompson tells the story of Bishop College from its founding in Marshall, Texas to the final days in Dallas.

Bishop College: The Bridge Between Two Worlds uses historic photographs and current interviews to tell the story of this small Texas school that made big contributions to the history of education, religion and African American culture.

Bishop was founded in Marshall, Texas in 1881. David Abner became the first African American person to graduate from a Texas institution of higher learning. He received his degree from Bishop College in 1884.

I know that I’ll have my DVR set for what should be a wonderful historical account of a lost African-American jewel. I hope to get an interview with the producer before the show airs.

Seeking a Breakthrough…

Welcome to our new bible series entitled, Inspiring Bible Characters. Our goal for the next eight weeks is to gain inspiration from several men and women who we meet in scripture. To set up this series of lessons, I want us to first examine our own lives.

While we have much to be thankful for, most of us are still grappling with things that cause us unrest. For our first lesson, I want to study what it means to arrive at a place of being at peace about whatever has been distressing you. Overcoming that personal distress is commonly referred to as having a breakthrough.

I truly hope that as you identify the changes you want to make in your life that you will then be inspired by our bible characters; and ultimately have a breakthrough of your own this year.

Have you been dealing with a particular situation that has caused you unrest for a long period of time?

  • What are some of the issues that we deal with on a long-term basis?

Some of the Things that Cause You Unrest…
•Financial problems
•Marital problems
•Lack of progress in one’s life (stuck in a rut)
•Family issues
•Stress on the job
•Issues with Self
•Relationship issues
•Past Hurts
•Grieving
•Physical health
•Emotional health
•Living in Sin
•An unmet desire or need

Did you know that sometimes the answer to our problem exists, but like in science, we just haven’t discovered it yet…
Some of our problems are complex and difficult for us to solve, but in Christ, we have the answer…

Dr. Frederick D. Haynes interview with Dallas South Part 2

Listen to Part 2 of this great interview with Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III as he gives a preview of what “Freddy Haynes Unscripted” might sound like starting in March on 94.5 KSoul. Dr. Haynes talks about DPD crime statistics recently released, the stimulus package pending in the Senate, and gets off a memorable quote about how his show will compare to Rush Limbaugh’s.

Dr. Frederick D. Haynes talks to Dallas South about his new radio venture “Freddy Haynes Unscripted” (Part 1 of 2)

They say membership has its privileges. I was fortunate to grab a few moments with my pastor, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III to discuss his new radio show that’s scheduled to start in March on 94.5 K Soul.

In Part 1 of this 2 part interview, Dr. Haynes talks about what “Freddy Haynes Unscripted” will focus on when it debuts next month and how the idea for the radio show (not station as you will hear me ask) came about.

Then make sure you log back in tomorrow for Part 2 of the interview when Pastor Haynes shares his views on the pending economic stimulus package and how his show will differ from folks like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Many thanks to Dr. Haynes as well as Veta Holt for facilitating the interview.

The Murder of Oscar Grant at Oakland BART Station

I apologize for taking so long to get to this story. This is video of the tragic killing of Oscar Grant by Bay Area Rapid Transit Officers on New Year’s Day.

I don’t know a lot about Grant’s background, but according to a family member in a press conference, he had turned his life around.

None of that comes into play here when Grant -who doesn’t seem to be resisting arrest- is shot and killed by one of the transit officers in Oakland. It’s reminiscent of the deadly force that DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) police used in the shooting death of 15 year old Bobby Walker a year and a half ago.

This is the first of 3 stories on excessive force that have gained national attention over the last few days.

Dallas Police Officer Shot/Killed in the Line of Duty

Dallas Police Department Senior Cpl. Norman Smith, 43, was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday evening at an East Oak Cliff apartment. Smith is the first Dallas officer shot and killed on duty since Mark Nix in 2007.

26 year-old Charles Patrick Payne has been arrested and charged with capital murder in Cpl. Smith’s death. According to the Dallas Morning News, Payne is on suicide watch. William Jobe who was wanted in connection with a felony was also arrested.

For more on this tragic shooting please read Tanya Eisere and Scott Goldstein’s story at DallasNews.com .

Our men and women of the blue put it on the line everyday, and from all accounts Cpl. Smith served our community with pride and honor. Our prayers are with his family, and we thank them for his service. Smith’s wife Lt. Regina Smith is also a member of the Dallas Police Department.

Cpl. Norman Smith would have celebrated 18 years on the job today.  I look forward to the Dallas County District Attorney’s office prosecuting this case to the fullest extent of the law -as they always do.

Designer urges display of flag on King Holiday and Inauguration Day

Dallas, TexasOn Sunday January 11, Maria Ross will present the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative flag to Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, Senior Pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ross will present the flag to Dr. Haynes during both morning services at Friendship-West.

“Dr. King’s flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, business, library, government office, school, and church,” said Ross, the flag’s designer. She’s asking that individuals and organizations fly the flag on Monday January 19th, Tuesday January 20th, and throughout Black History Month in February.

The official Dr. King commemorative flag was unveiled at The King Center in Atlanta in May of 2008. It is the only flag licensed by Intellectual Properties Management, the exclusive licensor of the King Estate.

The idea of the flag came from our company’s founders some eight years ago after being victims of a hate. They allowed the incident to drive their desire to carry on Dr. King’s legacy.

Pam’s House Blend: Homobigot Rick Warren to deliver invocation at inauguration

#1 Black Blogger and LGBT advocate Pam Spalding goes off on the Obama team’s decision to select Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the Presidential inauguration.  Here’s a little bit of what Pam had to say in her Homobigot Rick Warren Invocation Post.

  • I can understand the selection of Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, a revered veteran of the civil rights movement co-founder with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to deliver the benediction at Obama’s inauguration, but how on earth could he select fundie Rick Warren to do the invocation?
  • This selection is clearly not about “change” — it’s about making a high profile decision to give the stage over to a known homophobe; choosing Rick Warren is tantamount to asking any of the professional “Christian” set to stand up there. There is no excuse for this; given so many leaders of the faith community that are in alignment with equality for all.

She also points readers to Kyle of Right Wing Watch who says:

  • As we’ve pointed out several times before, in 2004 Warren declared that marriage, reproductive choice, and stem cell research were “non-negotiable” issues for Christian voters and has admitted that the main difference between himself and James Dobson is a matter of tone.  He criticized Obama’s answers at the Faith Forum he hosted before the election and vowed to continue to pressure him to change his views on the issue of reproductive choice.  He came out strongly in support of Prop 8, saying “there is no need to change the universal, historical defintion of marriage to appease 2 percent of our population …

By checking out Pam’s comments and some of the other sites that she’s directed folks to, this seems to be gaining some steam.  Ya’ll know I love Pam, I don’t think she’s too off base here.

We all watched Warren toss John McCain soft balls in mock debate, even though he hadn’t been in the sound proof room.   He tried to trip Obama up every chance he got, and is rewarded with a prime spot in history.

This is a story worth following.
