Dallas ranks #17 in New York Times list of 44 Places to Go in 2009
Dallas surprisingly (at least to me) ranks #17 on the New York Times list of 44 Places to go in 2009. But just make sure you don’t visit until after October 12th.
Dallas ranks just behind Monterrey, Mexico and just ahead of Bhutan on The Times List. Beirut, the capital of Lebanon was listed as the number one place to visit this year. I didn’t know that the city is referred to as “Paris of the Middle East.”
Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House
A big part of Dallas’ high ranking (4th among American Cities not including Hawaii), is due to the Dallas Arts District, which is propelled by two building that haven’t even opened yet. The Winspear Opera House and Wyly Theater -which will drastically enhance an already enviable collection of award winning architecture- are featured prominently in the New York Times description of Dallas. They are part of the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts that won’t debut until October 12.
By any measure this is a boon for our city and an honor that I figure Phillip Johnson and the folks at the Dallas Conventions and Visitors Bureau are already looking to use to their advantage. So congratulations Dallas! Looks like passing on the world’s most obnoxious stadium didn’t hurt as much as some people think.
