PLEASE READ: Dallas South Seeks Your Support

As many of you know, we are attempting to launch Dallas South into the upper limits of the blogosphere . To make this happening I’m going to need a little help from the Dallas South Family.

I hate to go all Sally Struthers on you, but if everyone reading this email right now contributed 10 dollars to Dallas South, we’d have more than enough gas to drive this puppy into the Summer. So image what 20 bucks would do.  Not that you have to limit your gift to those amounts….I’m just using those figures as examples.

There is a donate button in the sidebar, but just in case you can’t get to it, let me plop one down in the middle of this post. You can make a secure donation via credit card or Pay Pal account.

In all seriousness, I am very thankful for the Community Supports who have jumped behind this effort as well as all of the folks who have made donations so far this year. If Dallas South is going to be all that I believe that it can, it’s going to take a strong financial foundation to build it upon.

You are already, providing the first thing that I need which are your eyes reading the words that I’m writing. That’s most important. Links are good too, so if you have a website or blog please feel free to hook us up with some link love.

But in order to continue to push the envelope by providing the insight and opinions that are missing from mainstream media, a small gift here or there would be welcome. Even Wikipedia has done their own fundraising over the last few months.

As African-Americans in newsrooms across the country continue to lose their jobs, I think it’s important that some of us prepare to stand in the gap. Hopefully you feel Dallas South is doing so already and are compelled to chip-in. If you’re not able to do so in light of these tough economic times don’t worry, I’ll be back next month.

The positive emails I’ve received from all over the country just in the last week mean we must be doing something right. I appreciate each and everyone of you and may God bless you and yours.

The Emblem of The Helping Hand – Paying Respect and Paying it Forward

Thanks to Wayne at Electronic Village for passing the Helping Hand to Dallas South. The Helping Hand is a concept initiated at Sojourner’s Place. Here’s how The Villager describes Sojourner:

Sojourner commits her life to “leaving the pile higher than (she) found it“. She seeks to “pay that help and support forward” to those new to the blogsphere. As such, she created the “Emblem of the Helping Hand” as a token of her appreciation for blog mentors and a source of encouragement for those who are up and coming.

So here are the rules:

The rules for this award are simple:

  • Select 10 bloggers: 5 you consider your blogging Helping Hand then “Pay it Forward” by extending your “Helping Hand” to 5 additional bloggers in support and encouragement for their efforts.

  • In passing on the Emblem, each recipient must provide the name of blog or blog author with a link for others to visit.

  • Each recipient must show the Emblem and put the name and link to the blog that has given it to her or him.

  • If you have not already done so, show your recipients some love by adding them to your blog roll, Technorati Favorite list, or in any other way to further let them know that their blog voice is important to you and being heard.

  • Add your name to The Helping Hand meme at my new blog entitled The Emblem of the Helping Hand and don’t forget to leave a comment as a permanent record of all Helping Hand recipients.

  • Display the rules

To these 5 Blogs I give “Emblem of the Helping Hand” for all the help that you have given me along the way. Of course Villager would be on the list if he hadn’t tagged me first. Thanks Wayne, it’s an honor.

1. Dallas Progress -Mike Davis was there for me from the very beginning when I didn’t know a widget from a gadget. His straightforward style has been an excellent example, as has his willingness to serve in the community. Whether it’s on the City Planning Commission or helping to tear down drug houses, Mike D. is always on the case (and congrats on the Eagles).

2. What About Our Daughters – Gina McCauley is the dean of Black Bloggers, even though everyone may not be willing to admit it. Besides WAOD and the work she has done checking BET and D.L. Hughley, Gina started the Michelle Obama Watch Blog to make sure the coverage of the next First Lady was not crossing the line. She is also the founder of Blogging While Brown, the first conference for bloggers of color.

3. Eddie G. Griffin BASG – This ex-Black Panther is the epitome of old school activism using new school tools. I ran across Eddie almost two years ago and followed his blog every since. He’s been active in national issues but always represents in his native Ft. Worth, working inside and outside of the system.

4. Monroe Anderson – I met Monroe at the DNC National Convention where he was a credentialed blogger though he’s often omitted in talks of the “Denver.” The veteran journalist writes often for Ebony/Jet and has been helpful in the career change that I’m going through.

5. Pam’s House Blend – Pam calls her site An Online Magazine in the Reality-Based Community, and she an authority in the GLBT community. I’ve had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Pam both at the Blogging While Brown conference in Atlanta and the DNC Convention in Denver. I so admire and appreciate her calm demeanor, especially as she blogs about issues that are so hot. But at Pam’s House Blend….it’s always steaming.

If you’re not checking out the follwingblogs then you should be. While there’s a definite Dallas flavor to my Paying it Forward Blogs, they take on wide range of issues.

1. Because I Said So – Kristin (formerly known as Jazzy) has been a Godsend to Dallas South. After meeting her once at the Dallas South Blogoversary Party, Kristin agreed to serve as the co-host of my Blog Talk Radio Show. Her blog has traditionally be all over the place like mine, but in 2009 she has decided to focus her topics for a month. She has devoted January to writing on issues concerning Africa.

2. EdGray4America – As I’ve expanded my social networking horizons to Ning and Facebook, I was introduced to Ed Gray’s Blog. Like myself, Ed’s and his blog are very heavily skewed towards national politics, though he his extremely active in local politics personally. I’ve enjoyed interacting with Ed on various platforms and admire the work he does on his blog.

3. Change the Wind – Rev. Gerald Britt is establishing himself as a go to source on Dallas issues. He is an important member of the Central Dallas Ministries team, and is published monthly in the Dallas Morning News. His blog seeks to” change the wind in the current discussion on the policies and systems related to poverty in the United States of America.”

4. Now That’s What I’m Talking About – Theo Johnson started his internet venture as a podcast, but has developed a really nice blog in the process. The fellow A&M grad and Delta husband is known nationwide for his technical savvy and helping spirit. His insights are as diverse as his interests.

5. Go Zack – This young brother out of Chicago is making a name for himself. He aspires to become a television reporter and will be griding throughout ’09 in a quest to break into the mainstream media. Zack always has interesting perspectives and it’s worth it to check in on him from time to time.

Well these are my ten entries for the Helping Hand Award. Congrats to all and thanks for everything that you do.

Shawn P. Williams Launches New Age Media Firm

Dallas Blogger Announces Social Media Consulting Venture

Dallas, Texas (January 5, 2009) – On Monday, Shawn P. Williams announced the launch of a new business venture – Dallas South New Media. Dallas South New Media is a social media consulting and public relations firm focusing on politics, community groups, and non-profit organizations.

Williams is the publisher of the popular blog Dallas South. Dallas South was named one of Dallas’ Top 5 blogs by Outside.in, and finished 2008 ranked #49 of over 1,500 blogs tracked on the Black Blog Rankings by Electronic Village (electronicvillage.blogspot.com).

DallasSouthBlog.com is the backbone of everything we plan to do,” said Williams of the new endeavor. “But I want to help others get their message out so they won’t have to always wait for other media outlets to do it for them.”

While Williams understands the value of social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, and Ning, he also realizes that traditional media is still a driving force. “Dallas South New Media will work to bridge the gap between traditional media and new media; seasoned journalists and citizen journalists,” he said. “We all need one another.”

Shawn started his website Dallas South in June 2006 after reading an article in Men’s Health magazine. Since then, it has been featured on the NBC Nightly News as well as in major news outlets like The Chicago Tribune, The Toronto Star, NPR, BBC, and MSNBC. Dallas South was also one of three blogs from Texas to receive press credentials for the historic Democratic National Convention in Denver last year.

“For the first quarter, I think Dallas South New Media will spend quite a bit of time trying to identify a publisher for my book,” said Williams. “But I’m already busy with an engagement this month at a church in my hometown (Paris, Texas) discussing how to use social media to achieve social justice.”

Shawn is also a freelance writer and a frequent columnist for The Dallas Morning News, The Paris News, and Friendship-West Praise and Power Pages. He credits his readers -who he refers to as the Dallas South Family- for all of the blogs success. “I couldn’t do any of this without the people who log on to Dallas South day in and day out.

While he did not release the number of daily visitors, Williams reports that Dallas South receives over 1 million hits per month.

Top 8 Dallas South Posts from 2008

Today we’re running down the Top 8 stories posted at Dallas South in 2008.  Feel free to share some of your 2008 memories -Dallas South or otherwise- as well.

8. The story of Clarence Otis Jr. – Darden CEO leads Red Lobster and Olive Garden Jan 10th

otis_clarence.jpgI received an email regarding Mr. Otis and thought it would be a great story to share with the Dallas South Family. There were a number of folks who were glad to know C.O. was out there doing it big as the CEO of Darden Restaurants Inc., the largest casual dining operator in the nation. Darden is the parent company of Olive Garden and Red Lobster.

The story was later picked up in the North Dallas Gazette. (16 comments)

7. Soledad O’Brien speaks with Dallas South about upcoming CNN special on King Assassination April 3rd

soledad_o_brien.jpgI received an email from CNN asking if I would promote Soledad O’Brian’s upcoming special about the Martin Luther King Assassination. I agreed and then sent a message back requesting an interview with Soledad via email. CNN responded and apologized for not being able to meet my request, but asked me if I were interested in a live telephone interview. Uh….yeah

Soledad was so cool. We talked before and after the interview about the special and some of the folks she met while working on it. I had the chance to interview her again for CNN’s Black in America. (15 Comments)

6. Barack Obama declared winner of Iowa caucuses. Will African-Americans have the Audacity of Hope for a Black President? January 3rd

iowa.jpgAt the time, it was nice to see that the voters of Iowa -overwhelmingly white- would deem Barack Obama worthy of being the Democratic presidential nominee. But at the time, it still didn’t seem very realistic that this would turn into any national trend.

Yet when Obama took the podium on that January night, a night he identified as a “defining moment in history,” he seemed presidential. He seemed like a man that might be able to actually pull it off. I was behind him, but I still didn’t think it would happen. (2 comments)

5. The Great C.A.W. Clark, pastor of Good Street Baptist Church, dies Sunday in Dallas (1914-2008) July 28th

cawclark.gifC.A.W. Clark was one of the truly great preacher/pastors this country has ever seen. I had the opportunity to meet him in my grandmother’s living room when I was a child and my uncle served as an armor bearer for Dr. Clark.

He was often listed by Ebony magazine as one of America’s 15 best preachers. Clark’s homegoing was celebrated by dignitaries from all over the city and all over the nation.

4. A note to all by Anne Kilkenny  September 3rd

sarah-palin2.jpgEveryone on the internet owes Sarah Palin a little gratitude for all the traffic that she sent our way at the end of 2008. This email that I received from a Wasilla, Alaska resident is proof of that.

After checking it for authenticity, I posted the letter from Anne Kilkenny and the comments started rolling in. The next day Dallas South was listed on page one of Google searches for the term Anne Kilkenny. This is still tied for the most commented about story ever on Dallas South. (77 Comments)

3. Texas Democratic Election a Primary/Caucus Hybrid, requires an extra trip to the polls February 7th

democratslogothumbnail.pngThis wasn’t a particularly long post, but it was one of the first documentations on the web -outside of the Texas Dems site- about the peculiar way Democrats select their presidential choice in our state. We came to call it the Texas Two-Step, and prior to this year hardly anyone had heard of it.

This post was copied into emails and sent around the state by people trying to get the word out about the extra trip to the polls. It’s tied with the Kilkenny post for the most commented upon post. (77 comments)

2. The Media Lynching of Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Part 1 of 3) March 16th

wright.jpegThe beating that Rev. Jeremiah Wright took in the media was personal for me. I had watched Dr. Wright come to our church for the last ten years teaching a gospel of love and social justice.

The man who had married Barack Obama, and baptized his children, was now being used as the one hope to derail his candidacy. But Obama used this as an opportunity to deliver a pivitol speech on race.

Dr. Wright’s plans for a peaceful retirement went out the window, and his relationship with Obama was over. I wrote my first non-local column for the Dallas Morning News after this post titled Black Preachers Speak Truth To Power. (56 comments).

1. IT’S OBAMA!!!!!  November 4th

obamas-at-grant-park.jpg

I was typing feverishly while on the phone hosting the blog talk show just after CNN made the call.  It didn’t take a lot of words to capture what had just happend:

Wow, who woulda thunk it.  Yes we did.  Yes we did.  6000 People at Friendship West tonight for President Barack Obama’s big moment.  I have video that will be up on YouTube momentarily.

That truly was the moment. The moment that many of us had hoped for, but still wouldn’t allow ourselves to truly believe it was going to happen.  After months of campaigning, live blogging, debating, and the whole nine, the dream was finally a reality.  Barack Obama had been elected the 44th President of the United States.  (2 comments)
What will 2009 have in store for him, for us, and for this great nation?  Whatever it is, you know we’ll cover it here at Dallas South.

Happy New Year!!!!

We’re BAAACCCK!!!!

It’s been a tough few days for old Shawn.  With Dallas South down since Friday, I really didn’t know what to do with myself.  There’s good news and bad news as a result of this.

The good news is that the problems is that we’ve got so much traffic coming into Dallas South these days.

The bad news is that I have to find somewhere else to host the site.  We’ll be good for a little while though.

So give me a little time to get my blogger legs back under me and we’ll be ready to finish the year out strong.

Happy Christmas from Dallas South

I started saying “Happy Christmas” as my holiday greeting about 8 years ago.  Besides the strange looks I get, now people start correcting me because they think I’ve gotten Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’ confused.

But one thing not to be confused is why we celebrate this time of year.  We celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ, our Redeemer.  The joy that we share today is in remembrance of his birth.

But my odd yuletide greeting is confirmed by the memorable poem written by Clement Clarke Moore.  The narrator watches as St. Nick leaves in his sleigh and exclaims “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

May God Bless you and yours.

AUDIO FROM SHAWN WILLIAMS & KLIF’s JEFF BOLTON POST ELECTION INTERVIEW

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • I hope everyone will take a moment to listen to an interview that I did on KLIF 570 with Jeff Bolton on the morning after the election. I got a number of text messages from friends and family who say they enjoyed the interview, and KLIF Producer Clint Granberry was kind enough to share the audio with me.

After about 2 minutes of lead up, Jeff asks me about our watch party at Friendship-West and then asks a couple of questions regarding topics he and his listeners were discussing. One question involved whether not the election of Obama was a forgiveness for slavery, and the other is regarding the openness -or perceived lack there of- of the black church. Take a listen
