CITI & ST. PHILIP’S SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY CENTER ANNOUNCE THE 2009 DESTINY AWARDS,
FEATURING DR. MAE C. JEMISON
Citi & St. Philip’s School and Community Center are proud to present the Ninth Annual Destiny Awards Luncheon to be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Belo Mansion in downtown Dallas from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are thrilled to have as our keynote speaker, Dr. Mae C. Jemison, the first woman of color in outer space. Now, the Founder and President of two technology companies, the space flight was just one in a series of accomplishments for this dynamic woman.
Born in Decatur, Alabama and raised in Chicago, she entered Stanford University at the age of sixteen on a scholarship, graduating with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and fulfilled the requirements for an A.B. in African and Afro-American studies. She earned her doctorate in medicine at Cornell University Medical College.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Kramer and Marcus and Aiysha Spears will serve as honorary chairs for this meaningful event.
At the luncheon, the Destiny Award for Organization will be presented toThe Dallas Dinner Table for their support of improving race relations in our city.
The Destiny Award for Corporation will be presented to J. C. Penney Company for their leadership in embracing both diversity and inclusion in its workplace and in the communities in which it operates.
The Destiny Award for Individual Leadership will be presented to Larry James, Executive Director of Central Dallas Ministries, for his leadership in encouraging bridge building between individuals, organizations and communities for the betterment of our city.
And the Unsung Hero Award will be presented to Eddie Deen for his activism in the South Dallas community, working with organizations such as the Martin Luther King Community Court, Paul Quinn College, the International Street Church and Dallas ISD.
Destiny Awards are presented to those who have demonstrated exceptional work toward bridging relationships between the many diverse communities within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Funds raised by this event will support scholarships for the educational and outreach services provided by St. Philip’s, which is an independent elementary school in southern Dallas serving 270 African-American and Hispanic students, ages three years through sixth grade. St. Philip’s emphasizes academic excellence, cultural awareness and self-esteem and through the Community Center, provides social and educational services to 1,500 South Dallas residents.
