Old School Friday: Child Hood Singers

The theme for Old School Friday this week is “child hood singers.” We’ve already done the New Edition and Jacksons thing, so here are a few oldies but goodies for the younguns. Happy OSF!!!!

Monica – Don’t Take It Personal

I remember this being the hit in ’95 when I spent a summer in Muskeegon, Michigan.  I’ve always enjoyed Monica’s music and the..shall we say “urban” flava that she brings to the scene.

Roxanne Shante – Roxanne’s Revenge

Roxanne Shante was just 14 when she made the “answer” to Roxanne Roxanne. Not long after that she had a child, but she and her people had the business savvy to ensure in her contract that her record label would pay for her education. Between her hard work and their money (over $300,000), she is now a Ph.D. What if all rappers had that type of sense?

Tevin Campbell – Can We Talk

We were jammin’ Tevin freshman year in our Discman’s.  He even loaned me a mack line that I laid down on my wife back in 1992 when at the end of an evening I told her “tomorrow will bring a better you and a better me.”  Of course she didn’t buy it, but she’s still here ain’t she?

Bonus Tevin – Round and Round

I had to throw up this Prince produced Tevin Campbell hit that really introduced him to the R&B scene. It was his first solo joint.

Check out these other great Old School Friday participants.
