Old School Friday: Gone but not forgotten

Though many deserve consideration on this weeks OSF theme -Luther, Left Eye, Marvin Gaye, M.J. and many others, I’m dedicating the entire post to Aaliyah.  She made so much wonderful music in such a short period of time.  Even with 4 videos represented here, I’m still missing One in a Million, Try Again, At Your Best, I Miss You, and more.  We were blessed that her talents were gifted to us while she was on this Earth.

An “Are you That Somebody Cover” that is quite cool

Old School Friday: I had a crush on!!!

The Marvalus One has thrown out a doozie this week.    The only direction: I had a crush on.  There are a lot of candidates: Tracy Spenser, Shanice, Salt & Pepa, Dawn from EnVogue. But I had to go with the following:

Vanessa Williams – Just For Tonight

Who didn’t love Vanessa Williams? She was probably my second celebrity crush after Vanity.

The Jets – I’ve Got A Crush on You

12/13 year old Shawn had a crush on both of the fronts to this cheezy crew.  Not a bad little jam though, I’ve played it a couple of times this morning.

HAPPY OSF!!!

Old School Friday: “Sade”

All I can say is that as a high school senior and college freshman I rocked Sade all the time.  I guess rocked is sort of a misnomer, b/c it often accompanied a melancholy mood.  Sade gave way to Mary J. though (why did Sade quit making music?).  Looks like this will be a Sade night…anyway, Happy OSF!

Stronger Than Pride

This is pretty much Sade vocals carrying the entire song. (with a haunting drum in the background).  THIS IS GOOD MUSIC!!!

KING OF SORROW – Good song and good video

CHERISH THE DAY – My Favorite

Old School Friday: Criminal Records

We’ll this is a pretty creative topic for OSF.  I did a couple of takes on the same theme, one being artists with criminal records and the other a song with criminal in the title.  Here goes.

Da Brat – What’chu Like

Word is prison isn’t going too well for Da Brat.  With her in jail I think of a prison movie she was in (with Lark Voorhies, Monica Calhoun, and Lisa Raye – Da Brat’s sister) titled Civil Brand.

Boogie Down Productions – Criminal Minded

Happy OSF!!

Old School Friday: Prom Song or School Dance

The theme is prom song or school dance song, but I’m going to deviate a little.  I’m going with the Prom or School Dance “After Party” song.  These songs were a bit much for a school sponsored function, but were bumping at “The Razz” or “Ebony’s” into the wee hours.

R. Kelly “Slow Dance”

This was back when R. was still rolling with Public Announcement, and when kids still slow danced.  The little scene before the song starts was prototypical early 90′s: the hair, dress, that was our day.

Spice 1 – 187 proof

The song did have a violent undercurrent, but it was really creative, a mystery wrapped inside an enigma.  It introduced me to brands of liquor that I’d never heard of.

Old School Friday: First Date/Love Song

Well the Marvalus One decided to slow it down this week, going with an Old School Friday theme of First Date/Love Song.  So I go back to the days of puppy love, breathing on the phone saying nothing, and 3 month relationships.  The song that always comes to mind when I think of those days is Janet Jackson’s “Let’s Wait a While.”

Even with the cheezy keyboard riffs the song has a darkness that sticks with me.   Maybe it’s the black and white video, I don’t know.  And you can’t go wrong with Taimak right?

And then there’s Lenny Williams’ “Cause I Love You.”  No need for words.

Happy Old School Friday!!!  Check out these other OSF participants.

Old School Friday: Divas

This one was easy. I was a huge En Vogue fan back in the day. They came along during the heart of my teenage years, and could do not wrong as far as I was concerned. So consider this the En Vogue edition of Old School Friday.

This is a live performance of “My Lovin’” at the first MTV Music Awards. I can never listen to the “Woo, woo, woo, woo,” part without thinking of Jamie Foxx’s Wanda.

“Hold On” is still the quintessential En Vogue Track track for me, and the one that started it all from their debut album Born to Sing.”

Believe it or not the Funky Divas are back together again (They never should have split up). Here’s a medley they performed on The View a couple of months back.

Check out the other OSF Participants if you get a minute. Happy Old School Friday!!!

Old School Friday: My Wedding Song

K-CI & JOJO – All My Life
by Momo59-93

This one was easy.  Here’s the song that Martin Hodges played as Ms. Tamela Fields walked down the aisle of the Unity Center almost 11 years ago and became my wife.  Even at the age of 24, I had prayed for someone like her, and God found me worthy of this true blessing.  Happy OSF!!
