Dr. Frederick D. Haynes talks to Dallas South about his new radio venture “Freddy Haynes Unscripted” (Part 1 of 2)

They say membership has its privileges. I was fortunate to grab a few moments with my pastor, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III to discuss his new radio show that’s scheduled to start in March on 94.5 K Soul.

In Part 1 of this 2 part interview, Dr. Haynes talks about what “Freddy Haynes Unscripted” will focus on when it debuts next month and how the idea for the radio show (not station as you will hear me ask) came about.

Then make sure you log back in tomorrow for Part 2 of the interview when Pastor Haynes shares his views on the pending economic stimulus package and how his show will differ from folks like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Many thanks to Dr. Haynes as well as Veta Holt for facilitating the interview.

Look out for Wisconsin!

By Earnest Gates

Could Wisconsin be the new Ohio? Wisconsin’s Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen, is also co-chair for the McCain-Palin campaign in Wisconsin. Sound familiar?

After returning from the Republican National Convention, Van Hollen filed a lawsuit that sought to force Wisconsin elected officials to cross-check new voter registrations. If this does not sound like de ja vu, I would encourage you to come out to Friendship West Baptist Church this Friday night and check out the documentary, “American Blackout!”at 7PM.

In the words of Senator Barack Obama, “not this time.”

Show up or shut up!!!

By Earnest Gates

We all have been following this election for the past 20 months. We have seen Senator Barack Obama go from a long shot to the presumptive nominee to the first African American Presidential candidate in the history of this country.

It has been a long ride. The day that we have all waited for is just about upon us. As of Monday, October 20th, here in Texas we have the opportunity to cast our vote. It is time to put all talk aside and voice your opinion by voting.

You don’t have to debate with anyone who has different political views than you. All you have to do is cast your ballot. But if you don’t, don’t even think about complaining about the outcome.

Since voter suppression, voter fraud, and voter intimidation have become hot topics, this should not be as much of an issue as it was in 2000 or 2004. The ball is in your court. If you don’t show up, then shut up for 4 whole years!

2008 Presidential Election: What if Obama Wins?

By Earnest Gates

This is a question that I never hear anyone talk about, but it is a question that needs to be asked. Often times we prepare for failure but don’t do a good job preparing for success.

If Obama wins the election, on January 20, 2009, he will be sworn in as the first African-American President of the United States. Many people all over the world will be overjoyed at this milestone and there will be tears flowing as far as the eye can see.

But…the next day he will take on the burdens of the ENTIRE Black community if we do not begin to talk about what we should do if he wins. The problems that affect the Black community will not go away by using a magic wand.

Poverty will still be an issue. Low academics will still be an issue. Racism and discrimination will still be an issue. We will still need advocates and advocacy organizations. Barack Obama will only be able to do so much, especially if he wants to get re-elected.

So let’s begin to have an open dialogue about what needs to happen now to prepare for an Obama Presidency. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

How Dare They?

By Earnest Gates

After Senator Obama gives a major speech on education, the McCain campaign comes back with an ad that says that he supported sex education for kindergarten kids. How ignorant can you be?

What type of man would allow his campaign to make such an ad? Someone desperate to be President, that is who!

I no longer have any respect for John McCain as a Senator, or as a candidate for President. He has shown now that he is willing to get as deep in the dirt as humanly possible to win this election.

Anyone that would vote for a man who would do this and not saying anything about it, deserves whatever he gets. If he does win after this stunt,  I will do what I can to make sure he loses re-election (if he runs) by a landslide. And to see the MSM today talking about a pig and lipstick instead of the difference in the two candidates’ education policy let’s me know they are about ratings only, not journalism. Enough is enough!

Sarah Pal(es)in Comparison to other GOP Women

The question must be asked: Is this the best you can do?

The answer is obviously yes if posed to Senator John McCain. The Republican party has a strong farm system of women senators and representatives with foreign policy and domestic policy experience. Why Sarah?

To ignite the social conservative base that’s why. She is as far to the right of the Republican Party as Senator Barack Obama is accused of being to the left of the Democratic Congress.

She is an extremist conservative who was just what Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talk radio blowhards were looking for. However, she was not fully veted and it appears she is not going to be willing to talk to the media about it either.

So it is up to us to ask the critical questions that need to be asked to determine if she is “ready” to be President in the event Senator McCain should be elected and something unfortunately were to happen to him. Let the vetting begin.

Political Election Season in full swing for next 60 days

By Earnest Gates

People, it is game time. The next 60 days will be here and gone before you know it. There is still much work to do.

If you live in Dallas County, you have until midnight on October 6th to register voters. Don’t take any chances! We need to ask if people are registered like Christians need to ask if you are saved! If someone says they are registered, we need to ask if they have their voter registration cards, and if not have them to call the Dallas County Election Department (214) 819-6300 and make sure that they have them listed.

Once that is verified, two things must happen. First, the newly registered voter must go out and do the same thing that you did. Second, we must begin to tell those who are not sure if they will vote or feel that their vote won’t count what a John McCain administration will look like.

Less government programs (Head Start), less funding for after school programs, less funding for college grants, less money back on your tax return. Language is the key and we must know the issues and put them in language people we come in contact with everyday can understand.

October 7, we must go door to door and email and text everyone we know why John McCain should not be President. I will have a list for you by then. We must also tell everyone we know to go vote early (October 20th is when early voting starts). Find out where you can go and go! As a matter of fact, go with a friend. Go vote and catch dinner and a movie. Make sure you vote EARLY.

On election day, take off work and take people to vote or call and ask Obama supporters have they voted and if not, go VOTE now!

I will be back with more tips. This will get you started. Start TODAY!

If you don’t do everything you can, you will wake up the day after election day depressed and guilty. Don’t take any chances. You have been warned!!!

Do You Remember…?

By Earnest Gates

Michael Jackson put out a song with a very hip beat a few years ago entitled “Remember the Time.” I have a question for you: Do you remember the the last time a Presidential candidate separated himself from the sitting President? How about 1992?

Bill Clinton was the sitting President and was very popular with the Democratic base even though he had just been impeached for lying under oath. Vice President Al Gore intentionally distanced himself from a popular President and it ended up costing him the Presidency. Fast forward to 2008.

Even though with the general public George W. Bush has very low approval ratings, he is extremely popular with the Republican base. Will distancing himself from President Bush cost Senator John McCain the election too? Time will tell.

Evangelical Hypocrites

By Earnest Gates

It is amazing how people can use their religion for political expediency. I could not believe how forgiving the religious right was of the out of wedlock teenage pregnancy of Governor Palin’s daughter.

If this had been Senator Obama’s “teenage daughter”, we would have heard the words “lack of family values” ad nauseam. Not only are they embracing her, but they are saying the fact that she will have the baby and marry her “Baby Daddy” is very honorable and says this shows they are an average American family.

This is one of the most hypocritical things I have seen the religious right do to date. It is early, so keep your eyes open and expect the unexpected.

Beware of WMDs (Weapons of Mass Distractions)

By Earnest Gates

It is become more and more obvious that the Republican party and conservatives in general do not seem very “hopeful” about Senator John McCain’s chances of winning the presidency. Even sadder, John McCain does not think he can win being the Maverick, John McCain.

He has decided to turn the campaign over to “Karl Rove’s JV team.” Unfortunately, the playbook has the same plays in it from the past two decades. FEAR, FEAR, FEAR.

They have turned to WMDs to accomplish this mission. Senator Obama on Saturday did an excellent job, in a matter-of-fact way, of talking about the talent of the GOP being masters of distractions. You saw a sneak preview over the last week of what is to come in the Fall.

He is too young, he is too inexperienced, do you want a celebrity or a hero to lead you? Do you want the Messiah or a Man on a mission? All I can say is don’t believe the hype because that’s all it is. They want you to get caught in these rabbit trails so it can take your mind off of the real issues and concerns. It has worked in past but, in the words of Barack Obama, “not this time.”
